Norton Atlas description

1965 Norton Atlas 750cc project motorcycle. True Mileage Unknown.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please read my comments regarding the Title at the end of this description.

This Norton is offered as a restoration project; it has matching frame and engine numbers and appears to have most of its original parts. The 'slimline' Featherbed frame is in good, straight condition and shows no obvious signs of damage, rust or repair. The correct Roadholder forks are fitted, but the fork tubes are extremely corroded and the fender mounting bolts have been sheared off.

The front wheel has decent chrome but the rear wheel is heavily corroded. Both tires hold air, but clearly need replacing. The rear chainguard is missing.

The motor was partly disassembled when I acquired the bike more than 5 years ago. It seems to have burnt an exhaust valve but in attempting to remove the cylinder head, the previous owner sheared off 3 of the cylinder head nuts. The complete head and cylinder barrel assembly was removed for inspection and I have loosely re-assembled it to make shipping easier. The bottom end seems very good; no crank damage, tight big end bearings and minimal wear on the cams. The twin Amal Monobloc carbs are in good shape, operating smoothly and are corrosion-free. The correct Lucas K2F magneto is fitted.

The gas tank is clean inside, with minimal rust and no damage other than poor paint finish. The seat has a replacement cover in fair shape; the seat pan appears to be solid other than light surface rust at the edges.

The gearbox is missing the kick-start quadrant and some of the clutch actuating pieces. Some of these items might be found in the box of parts that will be included, but assume that replacements will be needed. The primary drive and clutch is complete, with the primary drive chain removed and included.

The rear fender has surface corrosion and some pitting, but is otherwise sound and reasonably straight.

Both the main stand and the side stand are fitted and operate correctly.

Various extra parts illustrated in the final picture go with the bike.

In summary, this bike requires a lot of work and numerous repairs to make roadworthy again; it's not going to run with just a carb clean. Only for the skilled and dedicated mechanic, preferably someone with a good set of Whitworth spanners.

TITLE STATUS: Alabama does not issue Titles for vehicles over 35 years old, so there is NO TITLE. I will supply a Bill of Sale only. If you need to have the bike tagged and registered (in my name) to help you register in your State, I can do this in return for my out-of-pocket fees, estimated to be about $200. This will take up to 10 business days from receipt of the buyer's payment.

All shipping arrangements and costs to be the responsibility of the BUYER. I will work with your shipper to facilitate collection and loading, provided reasonable notice is given so that I can arrange my work schedule accordingly. I've had good experience with Federal; I'm sure there are many other good shippers.

Please ask questions freely - but please don't wait until 30 minutes before the auction ends!
